USB-C; Port of Authority

USB-C; Port of Authority

With the latest laptops, phones, tablets comes a new type of port. Gone are those Type-A USB ports and are now replaced with  a new port:USB Type-C.

USB is the standard when it comes to connectivity and that’s why the USB-C is the emerging industry-standard connector for transmitting both data and power.

The port is not just as a better way to charge a device but a new type of connector, meant for delivering data and power to and from computing devices.

The USB-C connector started appearing regularly in mainstream systems in early 2015 and was developed by the USB Implementers Forum and counts more than 700 companies in its membership. It is part of why USB-C has been so readily accepted by PC manufactures.

Apple helped kick off the trend with the 12-inch MacBook that used a single USB-C socket to not just connect to all it’s peripherals but also to provide power.

The HTC 10 and LG G5 have incorporated USB-C into their designs also.

Similar to a Micro USB.

Looking at the  USB-C connector, one can’t help but see the similarity between the micro USB and USB-C, though the USB-C is more oval-shaped and slightly thicker to accommodate its best feature. Like Lightning and Mag Safe.

The USB-C connector has no up or down orientation.

Port Support.

The USB-C’s support for sending simultaneous video signals and power streams means that you can connect to and power a native DisplayPort, MHL or HDMI device.

Phones such as Google Pixel XL use the USB-C interface for charging and data transfer so its not inconceivable that future phones will switch to it from micro USB.

The USB-C was formally known as USB Type-C and it’s a 24-pin USB connector system. The USB connectors connects to both hosts and devices.

Devices that uses USB-C may be hosts [DFP: Downstream-facing port], [USP: Upstream-facing port].

USB-C is closely linked to several powerful new technologies, including USB 3:1, Thunderbolt 3 and USB Power Delivery.

If you are a business professional, content creator, gamer, then the Thunderbolt 3 is perfect for you. Let’s just say your world will get faster and simpler.

USB 3.1

Its the standard USB 3.1. Devices and computers are able to use both of the current plugs: Type-A and Type-B.

It enables the maximum functioning of USB by providing more flexible power delivery along with data over a single cable.

Be careful though , because not all USB-C devices support all of the latest USB-C specs. All USB-C cables must be able to carry a minimum of 3A current [up to 60W @ 20v].

Read the spec sheet[s] carefully so you know what you’re getting before you buy.

All said, the USB-C is a major step in the right direction. Slimmer devices, fewer ports, more flexibility and even better sound.
