Keeping your laptop’s hinge safe.

Keeping your laptop’s hinge safe.

One major part(s) of my laptop I don’t joke with are the hinges. I call them the ‘bone’ of a laptop.

When opening my laptop, it takes forever because I open it slowly and gently. (yes, you heard right)

If a laptop survives past the end of its warranty without the hard drive, keyboard or monitor requiring replacement, the next likely problem will be with its hinges. The hinges see more wear than almost any other part of the computer, and may begin to cause problems as the computer ages. This might make you recycle your laptop or sell it off.

Laptop screen hinges are one of the most delicate parts on your Laptop. Hinge damage are mostly caused by a drop or fall and it’s a common reason leading to replacement of older, otherwise working, laptops.

An instance where you open your laptop but you hear a creaky sound and found your screen hinges are cracked. What do you do?

First thing you should do is…STOP! Do not attempt to open up your screen. There are all kinds of tiny wires that are housed right around your Laptop screen hinges assembly. These delicate cables can get ripped apart easily, increasing the cost of the repair.

This could make the difference between a simple repair and having to buy new parts. Repeatedly opening the screen can damage the screen hinges or even more. It can also cause cracks to spread into the top cover and even the LCD screen. Big money!

Laptop hinges are generally made of low-cost metal alloys, or “pot metal.” Pot metal is not particularly durable, and over the course of a laptop’s life cycle, repeated opening and closing of the computer’s lid can cause wear that prevents the lid from staying in an open position.

The MacBook Air and Windows Slimline systems are especially vulnerable to hinge damage due to the very thin aluminum or plastic that surrounds the LCD screen to keep it in place. Prevention from damage is the major key in keeping those hinges safe.

Guidelines to prevent damaging your laptop screen hinges.

  1. Use both hands: Using both hands is advisable when lifting your laptop. No matter how heavy or light your laptop is, using both hands makes it safe from dropping. Even if you have to use one hand to lift your laptop, make sure your grasp on it is totally firm. Loose handling can easily make the laptop slip from your hand.
  2. Keep away from the edge: 98% of laptops are placed on tables. The possibility of it slipping to the edge of the table unnoticed is high. Most hinge damage are caused by drops, so it’s best we keep it away from the edge of your table, desk, e.t.c.
  3. Get a good case: We carry our laptop with us everywhere we go. For some, it’s basically their ‘office’ . If you fall into this category, it’s best you get a good carrying case. If possible, get one with a decent suspension. And no, we’re not talking about your cars suspension. Get a case with a back that has a suspended inner section for your MacBook Pro if possible. This will keep your laptop from coming into contact with the ground, since we know you like to toss your bag around at the end of the day.

If these few guidelines are carried out properly, Voala! You’ve saved a lot from expensive laptop hinge repair fees!
